Jayne Mansfield (born Vera Jayne Palmer; April 19, 1933 – June 29, 1967) was an American actress, singer, and one of the biggest sex symbols of the 50s and early 60s. She blew up on Broadway in 1955, hit Hollywood hard in 1956, and became a full-blown celebrity by 1957. She was a Playboy Playmate, nightclub performer, and 20th Century Fox’s answer to Marilyn Monroe.

She scored big with The Girl Can’t Help It (1956), The Wayward Bus (1957), Too Hot to Handle (1960), and crushed it as Rita Marlowe in both the Broadway and film versions of Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? (winning a Theatre World Award and Golden Globe). In 1963 she made history as the first major American actress to do a full nude scene in a Hollywood movie with Promises! Promises!.

Her name came from her first husband, PR guy Paul Mansfield. She was famous for wild publicity stunts, wardrobe malfunctions, and a nonstop tabloid life. At 34, she died in a horrific car crash on June 29, 1967, along with two others.
