Deutschland über alles sounds chauvinistic these days, but back in the 5th century, the whole western Mediterranean was German. The Franks and Burgundians in France - even today France is known as Frankreich in German, or Frankrijk in Dutch, and Francia in Spanish and Italian. The Vandals and then the Suebi and Visigoths in Spain. The Longobardi (Lombards) and Ostrogoths in Italy. The Vandals in North Africa. Stilicho and Aetius (Ezio) are good examples.
